Dear Community,
A few weeks ago, I took a red-eye flight from Boston to Memphis to meet my family and visit Graceland. Why Graceland? Well, a number of years ago, when I was just starting in academic administration, a colleague invited me to a conference at the hotel next to Graceland. I decided to take the tour of the house while I was there...and it has haunted me ever since.
Y'all, I was not prepared for Graceland back then. I didn't know much about it, other than it was Elvis's house. I had no idea it was a shrine preserved as closely as possible to how Elvis lived in it, from what was in the drawers to everything else. I mean, Graceland is wild.
So of course I wanted my beloved children to experience that incredible, quirky place one day! Obviously. Ha!
A Family Adventure
As often happens during our family trips, things took a strange turn. We woke up in the hotel next to Graceland to find the usually busy street deserted, except for police cars. We decided to head over to Graceland anyway, only to discover our scheduled ticket time was significantly delayed. Why? Because President Trump was touring Graceland at the same time that day.
The story gets even weirder. Elvis died the same year I was born, and we share a birthday. Growing up, Elvis movies would play on TV all day on my birthday. I used to think these were on because my dad wanted to be like him. (I mean, my dad did have that 1970s Elvis aesthetic going on, for better or worse.) When I realized those movies were on everyone's televisions on my birthday, it felt magical. My birthday meant Elvis, and no one else had that! The King of Rock was like my patron saint!
Embracing the Weird
All these strange connections to Elvis have left me wondering, what does it all mean? Honestly, I have no idea. But I do know that the best parts of life aren't when things go as planned. The most wonderful moments are often the delightfully weird ones, especially when we share these quirky experiences with people we love.
I want to hear about your weird experiences too! Please comment and share your stories with me.
